A Spoken-Word Poem
When I first started writing poetry, I started with the spoken-word genre. This was one of the very first full-length spoken-word poems I completed (that I was actually happy with).
Today, I hardly ever write spoken-word, preferring something a little more structured. Still, I am proud of the spoken word poems I have written, and I used to frequent spoken-word open mic poetry events, and loved performing them as much as writing.
This particular poem is a kind of reflection on the Resurrection of Christ. Enjoy!
Picture This
Picture this: I write all the time, rhymes flow from the depths of my mind, This is the time to relax and recline, Like everything is fine, we don't need t' rewind, Pass me another glass of wine... Now picture this: The lines are more than some scribbles on paper, It's part of the world I wrote down and I savour. Like green meadows, and fields of grain thereafter, The sun in the sky and smile's accompanied by laughter. Now picture this: A brush in hand, I'm painting on canvas, The image just moved, now tell me, who can this, Attribute to, I'm nothing but candid, No matter what, I'll tell you the truth, I can't miss... Now picture this: The scent of the sea in the salty beach breeze, The lushness and fullness of rainforest trees, The green of the grass and the colourful flowers, These are the things that engage me for hours! Picture this: The sound of angels' wings who are flying, And heavenly choirs fillin' the silence, With angelic vocals, trumpets and harps, The heveanly hosts are singin' their part! Just a few reasons I gave Him my heart, His beauty's all around, no need to look far! Picture this as I paint an image Into your minds, please take a minute, To close your eyes and listen. Holy Spirit come as a whisper, This is my prayer, speak to the listener. Describe his face, light all around, Gold and jewels encircle his crown! Eyes like the sun, and skin of jasper, Robes made of light, and voice like laughter! Circled his throne, a rainbow of colour, Twenty-four elders proclaim to each-other, Holy is he who was and is, And is to come in Righteousness! The Universe unfolds in his fist! Each star is named, not one did he miss! Now let me help you picture this! Made in the likeness of Him, we live, Created for love, and love as our gift, Yet the most beautiful scene is this: Painted in history and the heart of our God, Jesus Christ, who died on a cross! Yet, more powerful than that darkness at noon Picture this! An empty tomb...
