There are many poems I write that area simply not long enough for me to justify publishing in an article format. Such poems I have been publishing in the “notes” section instead, and since I’ve started I’ve collected quite a number of them.
Notes, however, are even less easy to go back and read through than articles. For this reason, much like my collections of prayers from the notes, I have decided to periodically collect these short poems and publish them together in articles, to save them from the waterfall of doom-scrolling.
Enjoy!
The Wisdom of Silence
Silence is the wisdom
of forgotten, bygone years
Stillness the cousin
to meditative prayers
Darkness the unwitting
harbinger of light
For peace is won
for they who fightLovely Valley Lily
Tinúviel! Tinúviel! O Lovely Valley Lily! With you I’m well in woven spell To cleave you close beside me. O Nightingale. O Nightingale! My crown, and heart’s companion! My song shan’t fail, nor tear my sails, With you astride to strengthen.
An Ode to Hoarfrost
Shine of white shimmering shall light upon these winter boughs - Clothing Nature’s naked arms in refracted shine of Sunlight’s charms - Wrapped in royal raiment white, tall stand trees on moonlit nights - No king, nor queen were ever robbed or decked as these, deserving ode.
An Exercise in Alliteration (which I was not able to coerce into a full poem)
Waking, mindful of make and mode, the sovereign strength, the sooted cloud. Clap of thunder thrumming through - drum the day the dragons rise. Winged in evil, their air aflame - ogre and wrath, wraith and raved. Man fought and conquered, but craved the fire, and so too fell - fell and fey - to dragons’ greed, and glut of gold
Tor
[taur]
noun : a rocky pinnacle; a peak of a bare or rocky mountain or a hill.
It lifts up, jutting out
there, just above -
in the heights it raises its head.
It stands tall, strutting forth
bare, still, unclothed -
rocky pinnacle surrounded
by sweeping, rolling green
hills 'round its base -
elevated in majesty.
A tower of tolling time,
Will-trained, not tamed -
the unmoved torupon the mount.Who We Will Become
Oh how we hold who we were with contempt who we are with mistrust and who we will become with unquestioning devotion Should we not do better to praise who we were for learning cheer on who we are to greater things and pray that who we will become will be closer to the One we devote our lives to
Butterfly - A Children’s Rhyme
Butterfly, butterfly, what for art thou, butterfly? Are you an insect? Or are you a fairy? By the dusting on thy wings, will I learn to fly? Butterfly, butterfly, what for art thou butterfly?
On the Sunrise
Wrap me in canvas clothed in pastels - hues of beautiful colours! Fill my eyes with the glory of the sunrise!
The Sky
The rolling waves of clouds crash into shrouds Along the golden sea-shores of the sky Gentle and cosmic, stormy and bright Their rays delight every eye of the passersby Beholden and true, in their colours and hues With their ageless songs they sigh With powerful voices, rumbles and shouts Their bouts of melody cry
The Waking Earth
The East wakes with gold and fire
the West wraps its azure skin in violet royal
both to greet the Sun
in their majesty robed.
Rising up to meet the Earth
with gentle kiss of heat and light
vibrating warmth along her skin
she bathes in Sol's strong embrace.Shaping Wave - A Poem in Prose
What lies beneath the waves of unfathomable depths? What murky creatures hide, unknown to those who ploughed the foam? What forgotten treasures, sunk by storm or luck, lay waiting to be found? Who among men could charge these seas - contest the briny waters?
Are there any wise enough, any brave enough, any willed enough to enter in? For these waves reflect the wide and azure heavens, in their glory, wrought by no hand of man, but in celestial winds by Divine Breath. Is there any worthy to constrain these chaotic waves?
None, but the hand who shaped them.
Mark 4:39-412 Timothy 2:11-13 in Alliterative Verse
If with him we give up our life
then life we shall have in him -
If fast we hold to him
in him also shall we reign -
If we deny him
henceforth we shall be denied -
If we are faithless
faithful he remains.Comprehension Pending
What flows from the tip of a pen
grows as an ink-stained page -
unwilling words coerced to shape
the weight of a conscience :
Thoughts on the scale of emotion
railing on internal confines,
winding in sonorous dissonance -
provenance of comprehension.
Yet it pends emergence.Hollow Planets - A Space Poem
Bright star, bending Time breaking into minds. Miners deep, mast’ring ore, making severed Roots Ravag’d planets, returning never, rending from their breasts battered tokens, bruised and bleeding - Benign, we never were.
Trolls and Sirens
Trolls and sirens raise their heads, the moment that we leave our beds, and venture forth into their realm. And there they seek to wrest our helm - to drive our ship into the shoals, to rocky crags, into Sheol. Our dismay is their delight - their joy: our stumbling, and our plight. They lure us by bait well-tested, with ire and wrath, words contested; Son’rous voice, and sumpt’ous figures - they fill our eyes and ears with madness! Whence that trollic laughter echoes - its course and grating voicing rolls: Lady Folly, and her party, wrathful Ares, lustful ‘Dite! For trolls and sirens liveth still, and prey upon distracted wills.
Oblivion (A Prose Poem Reflection from July 13, 2022)
When we - who find our making in the image of an Almighty God - undertake, in our Folly, to reinvent our humanity in the likeness of our own designs, and having laboured studiously at this task for long ages in deep darkness - Then the lamp will be lit, and we will examine the writing of our masterpiece, only to find there, penned in the desperate hand of a man condemned: “Oblivion. Oblivion! Oblivion.” For such is the lot of the one who would rend himself from the source of his very being.
The Hatchling
In the yard, among the bones of trees that once had grown, I heard the song of New Life’s cry as I went passing by. A chick, a babe, a hatchling, not yet learned to fly, has come to know its only home, and Love among tree-bones
