Altiloquent

A Word Poem

I used, once upon-a-time, to write “word of the day” poems, with the aim of attempting to describe the meaning of a word with a poem, thus also to solidify them into my own personal lexicon. This one I wanted to bring back from the vaults.

I must say that I am guilty as charged, as far as this poem is concerned. My wife often pokes fun at me for my use of “fancy” language, and often tells me I need to use simple turns-of-phrases for our young children. I’m inclined to believe she’s right - but dang it, I like fancy words!

Altiloquent

adj. :  (of language) high-flown or pretentious

My tongue will slake its aridity
    with wide 
    and extensive vocabulary.

Seeking phrases -
    eloquent.
Vernacular -
    elegant.

My quill will set -
    ink inscribed -
    to fill the pell ;

arresting writ ;
    arousing wit.
Such is my altiloquent manner. 

Yet I cannot truly attain,
any significant assemblage
    of avid bibliophiles
to my chef-d'oeuvre -

for, alas !
    lost, 
        my readers
            begin to 
                wander...
